How to test Computer RAM to find out its condition

Random-access memory (RAM) is a high-speed and super-fast storage used in computers to temporarily store and access data.

RAM works by giving applications a place to store and access data in the short term. And RAM also stores information that the computer is actively using so it can be accessed quickly. The more programs run by the operating system, the greater the need for RAM.

Like other computer components, RAM can also be damaged. One sign of damage to RAM is that the computer screen turns blue or what we know as “blue screens of death” (BSOD).

Early signs of damage to RAM can be easily recognized, such as the occurrence of “crashes” when using the computer, but the operating system can still run. When the damage is getting worse, “crashes” will occur more often.

To test whether the RAM still has stable and normal performance, you can use the following tool.

A. Windows Memory Diagnostic tool

Windows Memory Diagnostic tool is an application to test RAM, which is a default application from Windows. This tool is already available on Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows 7 without you needing to install it.

Memory Diagnostics Tool will work by checking RAM for any errors while working on your system. This helps you to determine if a problem is occurring because of hardware failure, including RAM, motherboard, and more.

How to use Windows Memory Diagnostic tool

1. Type “Windows Memory Diagnostic” in the search menu and select the application.

The computer will restart to test memory health.

3. Wait for the process to finish

The testing process will go through several stages and it will take time until all processes are completed. If the process is complete, the computer will restart again and enter Windows as usual.

B. MemTest86

If you are looking for a more powerful tool, you can use PassMark MemTest86. MemTest86 can perform a wider variety of tests and may find issues that Windows tests cannot.

PassMark MemTest86 does not require an operating system to perform memory tests, so you can use it on both Windows and Linux. You can run MemTest86 by booting from a USB Flash drive.

How to use MemTest86

1. Download PassMark MemTest86.

2. Extract the downloaded file .

3. Insert the USB Flash drive into the PC.

3. Run the file “imageUSB.exe” to create a bootable MemTest86 USB Flash drive.

4. Restart the computer and change the boot to USB Flash drive

5. Select “Config” on the MemTest86 Home Screen

6. Select “Start Test” to test.

Testing can take from 30 minutes to several hours. If an error appears, you don’t need to continue testing until it’s finished, because the RAM you are using is definitely a problem. You can replace it with another RAM chip to test it.

MemTest86 displays when it encounters a memory error.
