An IP (Internet Protocol Address) address is a series of numbers used to identify and distinguish each device connected to a computer network. IP plays an important role in the transmission of data over the network. The information is packaged in data packets and sent to the specified destination IP address, thus enabling communication between devices connected in the network.

An IP   address conflict occurs when two or more devices on a network use the same IP address. Every device connected to the network must have a unique IP address to communicate effectively.

  1. The inability of the device to connect to the network. If two devices have the same IP address, the router or other network device will not be able to distinguish between them, thus preventing access to the network.
  2. Interruption of communication between devices. IP conflicts can cause communication failures between the devices involved. This means that the device may not be able to send or receive data correctly.
  3. Interruptions in IP address allocation. In the event of an IP conflict, the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) settings responsible for assigning IP addresses to devices may be compromised. This can result in the device receiving an invalid or incorrectly distributed IP address, causing problems in the network.

Causes of IP Address Conflicts

IP address conflicts can occur for several reasons, including:

  1. Improper manual settings. If two devices on the network are manually configured with the same IP address, a conflict will occur. This can happen if a user accidentally sets the same IP address for a different device.
  2. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) error. DHCP is used to dynamically assign IP addresses to devices on a network. If the DHCP server is not configured correctly or there is an error in the IP address allocation process, there may be situations where more than one device receives the same IP address.
  3. Damaged or problematic device. Sometimes, network devices such as switches or routers can experience problems or malfunctions that cause IP address conflicts. This can happen if the device is unable to properly manage the IP addresses assigned to devices on the network.
