In addition, the ELIZA program created by Joseph Weizenbaum in 1966 also became one of the important early applications of AI. ELIZA serves as a conversational program that can simulate a dialogue with a user, mimicking the interaction of a therapist. Although simple, ELIZA shows how computers can interact with humans more naturally and paves the way for the development of natural language processing technology.

However, despite significant advancements, the first wave of AI also faces various challenges. High expectations for AI capabilities often do not correspond to reality, leading to disappointment among researchers and investors.

Many claims about AI’s capabilities were overly optimistic, and when the expected results were not achieved, funding for AI projects began to decline drastically around 1974. This phenomenon is known as “AI Winter,” where interest in AI research plummeted.

The impact of this early technology is still felt today. Innovations such as voice recognition that emerged from research at that time have grown rapidly and are now an important part of daily life through applications such as virtual assistants, such as Siri and Alexa.
