Easy Ways to Create Dynamic and Non-Destructive Vignettes in Photoshop for Black and White Photos

5. Controlling the Size and Softness of the Vignette

Step Five: Set the Vignette Size

  • Use Scale slider in the Gradient Overlay panel to adjust the size of the vignette. You can make it bigger or smaller as needed.
  • If you want the vignette effect to be smoother and less flashy, slide the slider to the right to zoom in on the gradient. Conversely, if you want a more intense effect, slide the slider to the left to zoom out the gradient.

Controlling Edge Softness

To control the softness of the edges of the vignette, click on Gradient tab in Layer Style dialog. Here, you can adjust the Smoothness to make the transition between dark and light areas smoother or sharper.

6. Set the Opacity of the Vignette

Step Six: Setting the Opacity

  • Slide Opacity slider in the Gradient Overlay panel to set how dark or light you want the vignette effect to be. If you want a smoother effect, reduce the opacity. If you want a stronger effect, increase the opacity.
  • Once you’re satisfied with your settings, click OK to apply the changes.

Tips:

  • Experiment: Feel free to experiment with different settings such as size, softness, and opacity to find the effect that best suits your image.
  • Non-destructive Editing: Since this effect is applied as Layer Style, you can always go back and edit it at any time without damaging the original image.
